Pre-Teens Having a Blast

The Westside Pre-Teens continue to have a blast on different outings, including their recent event to the Snoqualmie Tubing Center. Their focus is having tons of fun together, and studying the bible at church. Having fun and focusing on what truly matters has been wonderful in bringing the group together.  We are so thankful for the support of our inspiring campus ministry members who came along and encouraged us greatly.

Linda Brumley–My Trip to Portland

A report from Linda Brumley on her Forgiveness Workshop:

One of the wonderful things about living in the Northwest is the close proximity to sister churches.  Even a day trip or a weekend offers opportunities for fellowship with other disciples—to the north, south or east.  So many wonderful spiritual bonds have been formed.  Our teens have joined teens from Portland, Ashland, Boise, Missoula, Spokane, and Vancouver, BC in retreats and camps.  Our singles have dated disciples from these churches and our campus students have taken road trips to fellowship with students on other campuses.  We are so blessed to have such accessible friends.

I was in Portland last weekend leading a Forgiveness workshop.  At the same time one of our campus women’s Bible Talks was camping out on a Portland elder’s living room floor—making memories and deepening bonds.

The workshop was well attended and enthusiastically received.  Most of the workshop deals with forgiving others, but two of the sections address forgiving God and forgiving self.  I only addressed these two issues briefly assuming the greater need was focused on other people.  But the desire of the women there to delve more deeply into being at peace with God and themselves garnered me an invitation to return.

A return to Portland is surely no burden since it means getting more time with Steve and Lisa Johnson and Buzz and Anita Banadyga.  It takes no time at all to feel like you’ve known someone forever when your hearts are united in your love for God and the people you serve.  Looks like I’ll be going back in March or April.

Staff Meeting News

Our Feb 14 staff meeting included (as we do once a month) South Sound ministers Dana & Gin Perkins, and Marcus & Noemi Wallace. We were able to pray together that morning for special needs in the church, and for those close to a decision for Christ.  In addition, we discussed details of church discipline, how we would film a “20/20 Vision” segment for Disciples Today (and for us to see in Seattle!), and feedback about last Friday’s “Family Connections” outreach night.  Scott taught a lesson to the men (“How we know what love is”) and Linda Brumley taught the women’s discipleship group.

Some of the news from the meeting:

  • The Balsoms’ adopted son was recently baptized into Christ.  Jeff has served an elder in the Chicago church and is currently battling a challenging cancer.  The Brumleys have been close to them for many years.
  • The ongoing BC revival featured the baptism of Stephanie Morais.  At her baptism Stephanie thanked all the teen leaders who had walked with her over many years.
  • Many athletes are coming to the UW “athletes’” Bible Talk, led by the Whitakers and anchored by our football brother Andrew Hudson, whose humility baffles and inspires his teammates.
  • On MLK Day, disciples helped canvas over 4000 homes in the cause of fire prevention
God is doing good things in all our lives;  please send up prayers for your ministers as they journey to Vancouver Feb 29 for the annual Northwest Leaders Summit!

Elliott Richards Gives His Good Confession

Elliot Richards is from Shoreline, WA where all his family resides. He attends Shoreline Community College and is working towards his Engineering degree. Elliott was approached by Jacqueline Villanueva, a member of the Seattle Church of Christ and a high school peer. She asked him to come to church one day and coming from a religious background he was happy to attend. After attending Sunday service Vong Ly, a single brother, asked Elliot to start studying the bible. Elliot began his studies with Tim Kadri, another single brother, and Vong. Elliot was quickly impacted by the Cross of Christ and after studying the Bible more closely he found there were a few puzzle pieces missing. Tim, Dan, and Vong all agree that an eagerness was manifesting in Elliott’s heart that was inspiring a very visible change in his character. This led to regular meeting and dramatic changes in his life. It was obvious to everyone, including Elliott’s family. They all were there to witness his baptism on January 22nd, 2012 and have felt a positive impact from Elliott’s decision to make Jesus the Lord of his life. Elliot is now an active member serving in a Singles Bible Talk in Bothell, WA with all the brothers that helped him change his life.

The Blessings of our Annual Auction Event, by Lisa Lewis

Hurray Another 100 Years Auction! By Lisa Lewis

I am so grateful to be able to co-chair our wonderful auction with Jay and Carol Kelly. This will be our 5th year and we have raised over $100,000 that helps pay off the mortgage, renovate, refit, and refurbish our beautiful church home. Each year we get better and better with items that we procure for auction, the food, ambiance, and fun. It’s a must see and this year we have set the date for September 22nd! Please don’t miss out on the evening because you might be missing an incredible opportunity…..

LIKE the auction item that our family won in last year’s auction. Scott and I, along with Mack & Zoe Strong and Todd & Casey Schoephflin, won a month of family devotionals with our church Elder, Ron and his amazing wife Linda Brumley, or as I like to call them the Grandpa & Grandma of the Church.

Some families conduct incredible devotionals for their children, ours….well, let’s say it’s been hit or miss. So, to inspire us to focus on our children’s relationship with God, we felt like a month with some experts would help. In the month of January our family has spent every Monday night with Ron & Linda studying out the Fruits of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22. Our children beg us to go back as soon as we leave and talk about the lesson throughout the week. I’ve asked myself why are they so enamoured with Ron & Linda’s devotionals?….We are only there 45 minutes…., there aren’t any videos, candy or presents. Then it occurred to me, Perfect Love. Ron & Linda LOVE our children, no, they ADORE our children and as a parent I don’t know how to describe when someone adore’s your child, but it is magical.

Their lessons are fun and creative (the picture shows the “mouse” that Linda made for each child, she was demonstrating Kindness).

They are patient; and they listen to each child as if what they are saying could change the course of our world (and I suppose it could). I have learned that in this world of over stimulation, it is good to take some time and listen to our kids, to do a little craft or sing a little song (the video is of our children, Grace & Pryce singing the books of the New Testament, which they learned from Ron & Linda in one week!) that will help them understand the principals of the bible. It doesn’t have to take long, it doesn’t have to be arduous or burdensome. But, what it creates is delightful, pure and refreshing. Sitting at a table, singing, praying and opening the bible with the most precious folks in our lives. I will cherish these past four weeks in my heart forever. Our hope and prayer is that our children will benefit from their time with the Brumley’s but also from dad & mom learning a trick or two from the Masters.

So, if you think that the auction is just a good time (which it is) it can be so much more.
