Each day during the month of December, the Region Leaders of the church will post a short blog about blessings in our lives. We hope it will inspire and encourage you as we head into a new year…enjoy!
Day 2 – God and Dog (from Scott)
These three pictures (sorry couldn’t upload them yet!) are of Kurt, one of my wife’s unsinkable border collies. Kurt is as goofy as he looks in most contexts, but when he’s out with sheep, he turns into Bruce Willis. These photos are from the national championship of sheep handlers, which Lynne and Kurt qualified for in 2011. They did really well, qualifying for the semi-finals.
None of this, of course, really mattered to Kurt. Prize money, acclaim, blue ribbons–even sheep themselves–don’t matter much to him. Rather, Lynne matters to Kurt. Their partnership (see Daren’s blog on Day One) matters. He wants to please her, and follows her around, ironically, like Mary’s Little Lamb. I didn’t grow up with dogs, and so these past few years being around border collies have been an epiphany–seeing a special kind of mammal that connects with us homo sapiens, lowering my blood pressure, making me laugh, and always, always greeting me at the front door when I come home.
What’s God trying to show us here? (Romans 1:20). I’ll leave that speculation for another article. For now, I see The Dog as a special blessing from God.
