Lynne hosted a sheepdog trial this past Saturday up in Stanwood; she not only has competed, gone to the national championship tournament, but now can actually host for other wannabes. Why does this connection of land and animals mean so much to her? For the same reason our dogs—our pet dogs—mean a lot to me. Animals, domestic and otherwise, are a blessing because like us, they have an emotional brain. Bless the beasts.
Unlike reptiles, which have no limbic brain, mammals can actually experience limbic resonance with human beings, not unlike the gaze between Moms and infants. We truly, really, neurologically, if not spiritually, connect to our domesticated mammals (for us, dogs).
God is telling us something in this. And we’ll leave that speculation to another time. But for today, rejoice in the blessing the beasts can be.
