Profile in Faith: Mark Kontos shares about his mom, Jenny, coming to faith in her 80s.

Mark and Jenny square picBelow is an inspiring letter from one of our Prime Time Ministry members reflecting on the blessing of watching his mother come to faith over four years ago. Now at 85, Jenny Kontos is the oldest member of the Seattle Church of Christ.

Dear Family and Friends,
I want to share a miracle story with you.
My 2009 New Year’s ended with tragedy as my mom had a severe stroke at her home in San Diego on 12/31/2008. The doctor’s said that she had a 50/50 chance of coming out of her coma and if she woke up, there would be a 99% surety that with survival would come multiple severe impairments.
I was due to pick up my date for the New Year’s formal and it actually served as a great distraction as I focused on my date.
Things changed as soon as I returned home. Grief and sorrow set in and gripped my heart. I cried out to God all night long through many tears of intense prayer.
New Year’s Day started with surrender on my heart mixed with a longing to at least see my mom once more. A deep hope imbedded in my heart for many years was to somehow baptize her into Christ.
At 11 AM I received a phone call from my excited beyond belief brother asking me if I wanted to talk to mom! The doctors were dumfounded as well. She has no impairments other than being weak and stays in her wheel chair.
I expected nothing less as I eventually ended my prayer vigil by daring God to show those pessimistic doctors just who He really is!
With generous help from my brothers and sisters in the church, I was able to buy air fare to San Diego and spend a full week to help her return home from the hospital, give her 24 hour care, and strenuously, due to my own disability, transform her apartment into a safe and healthy home.
While together I started reading scripture to her every morning. Soon we were studying the bible about what it meant to be a true christian. She loved hearing the truth of God’s word!
I am humbled to have been able to baptize my mom on 1/27/2009 into the body of Christ!
Today, she lives very nearby in an adult family home and is fairly stable. I won’t be able to bring her to church any more but Sunday was her day to go to church at the Queen Anne building where she cherished the singing and the love that she saw there!
Amen and thank you God!
Your brother in Christ and member of the Prime Time Ministry,
Mark Kontos
